The meeting was organized by the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in collaboration with two European institutions,
the Instituto de Parasitologia y Biomedicina Lopez-Neyra, CSIC (Spain) and the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS, Germany).
Advances in drug development in the field of neglected diseases (ND) are hindered by the lack of investment in discovering novel compounds
and the limited number of new drugs in the pharmaceutical industry. Moreover, on comparing the medicinal chemistry done in the ND area
with that of other therapeutic areas, it becomes evident that the need for research in the ND area has to be met by academic, non-commercial
and governmental bodies as well as the pharmaceutical industry. This meeting provided a forum for reviewing current progress and discussing
the possible directions of drug pipelines to meet the medical needs posed by ND pathologies. It was attended by participants with a wide range
of expertise including medicinal chemistry, structural biology, molecular modelling, bioinformatics, parasitology, and molecular biology; representatives
of the industries and government were present. The meeting was focused on five topics: (i) the molecular biology of pathogenic Trypanosomatidae;
(ii) advances in structural biology of neglected diseases; (iii) medicinal chemistry: target selection and project development;
(iv) progress in chemotherapy strategies and drug candidate pipelines; (v) Pharmaceutical Development Partnerships (PDP)
